COUPLED showcases chemical looping innovation at ICCL 2026

The 8th International Conference on Chemical Looping (ICCL 2026) provided an important opportunity for the COUPLED consortium to showcase its expertise and ongoing work in chemical looping, while connecting with researchers, scientists and industry representatives from around the world.
COUPLED was strongly represented throughout the conference, with members from Helical Enterprises, PNO Innovation, Honeywell CT and ZEFIRA, alongside The University of Manchester, contributing to different sessions and discussions.
Alvaro Amieiro from Honeywell CT opened the scientific programme as the conference’s first keynote speaker, providing an overview of the syngas generation technology platform and highlighting the role of chemical looping as a breakthrough technology developed at Johnson Matthey and now advanced within Honeywell CT.
Isabel Pazmino-Mayorga from The University of Manchester presented the first design and expected performance of the COUPLED pilot unit currently under construction at Helical Enterprises and planned for installation at the SNAM site, offering insights into an important step towards demonstrating the technology at larger scale.
The conference concluded with the workshop “From Idea to Commercialization with Horizon Europe Projects”, jointly organised with the EU-funded Bio-FlexCLC and Bio-MeGaFuel projects. Vincenzo Spallina (The University of Manchester), Coline Perrin (PNO Innovation) and Fausto Gallucci (ZEFIRA) contributed to the workshop, exploring how chemical looping innovation can progress from research towards deployment and commercialisation.
Overall, ICCL 2026 offered an excellent platform to highlight both previous and ongoing work from COUPLED partners and to exchange knowledge with the wider chemical looping community.
