Objective

The key objective of COUPLED is to design, scale-up and demonstrate a modular integrated process that converts H2 or biogas with recycled CO2 into sustainable and cost competitive syngas via a chemical looping process. Syngas is later converted into carbon-neutral liquid fuels such sustainable aviation fuel via Fischer Tropsch synthesis or methanol. The process to carry out the reaction is provided by unmixed combustion of off gas feedstocks (derived from carbon intensive industries) combination with a downstream CO2-selective membrane that are used to recover and re-use the CO2 within the process.

Two versions of the process are considered:

GREEN COUPLED

the main energy source is green H2 and syngas generation occurs via Chemical Looping Reverse Water Gas Shift (CL-RWGS)

BIO COUPLED

biogas is used in combination with CO2 and syngas is formed via dry reforming Chemical Looping Reforming (CL-R)

The focus of the project will be the validation of the technology at TRL7, the detailed Techno-economic Assessment of the COUPLED concepts applied to carbon-neutral liquid fuels, linked to hydrogen and valuable chemicals and iron & steel industries and the overall life cycle and societal sustainability assessment. To ensure a rapid scale-up and access to market of the commercial application, the COUPLED consortium will develop a sound business plan and exploitation strategy for each industrial scenario.
